"Jess"

Jess our foundation bitch was bred by Vera Pointon from 'Magic' who in turn was from a very successful import NZ Ch Benanee Ballina (Imp Aust). The arrival of Jess's litter prompted Vera back to the show ring, and our introduction to serious dog showing. Encouragement and assistance from Brian, Vera's husband, in the hunting prowess of the GSP made the adoption of the breed complete. Jess has been an excellent producer for us. Both as a hunting companion, and a dotting mother, grandmother, and as a companion for Pop, she has been outstanding.

Jess was also instrumental in the name of our kennel. "ODESSA", a Black Sea port in my father's birth country of the Ukraine. With our foundation bitch black it seemed very fitting.

"Jedda"

While visiting Valache Kennels in November 1994, I fell in love with Anne's housedog "Dempsey" (Aust Ch Valache Silk Degrees). I felt that this dog would be perfect to put over "Jess". As for a number of reasons this was impractical, I went for second best and bought Jedda, who stayed with Anne until she could be mated to Dempsey. Jedda arrived in NZ in whelp in 1995 and 18 days later, produced 8 pups. Our intention was to produce a male as close to Dempsey as possible. Jedda responded with her 1st born an outstanding female ("Satin-An-Silk"), then 2 more females and then 5 males, one of these boys being "Son O Silk". The exercise had been a resounding success. Jedda has a very gentle and unimposing nature along with a very strong hunting drive, but better suited to Upland game rather than Mallards. She is inseparable from her daughter, Holli.

"Kate"

Kate is every bit Sam's sister, very affectionate, but also very sharp. She misses nothing. As a junior both Sam and Kate had a stunning show career that started just 2 days out of the puppy class. We made the long journey to Wellington for a weekend of shows and ended up with 4 challenges and 2 BoB with litter- mates, under an Irish husband and wife judging team. A couple of weeks later Kate took 'Best Bitch' at Hamilton and then in September won 'Best Bitch' at the 1996 National PAL Dog Show. From a start in June both siblings were titled by November 1996, one with a National Challenge. After a break in showing Kate again took BB at the 1998 Hamilton Winter Show, our 2nd biggest show of the year.

This was an unplanned mating, a result of Sam's lust. This type of close breeding is sometimes intentional and has
resulted in several Grand Champions. Holly is a very active full on example of the hunting instinct within this line. She moves well and very freely, evident by her success in the show ring. As a Baby Puppy she accumulated 4 Best Bitches, 2 Best of Breed and 2 Baby Puppy of Group. These BoB's wins often over her mother and over her father. Holly like her mother is a very affectionate dog who is happiest when out in the paddocks having a run and checking out for potential game. Jedda and Holly have a great bond between
each other and one will miss the other if they are separated for even a short length of time.

Freda is from Sam's first litter with Jess and has proven to be a worthy daughter. She has gone on to produce a champion daughter and is an outstanding example of GSP hunting ability. With young dogs at her side, she will spend hours stalking any type of bird, and pass on this patience to her offspring.

Almost a clone of Holly, Xena was titled as a Junior. She has a great temperament, which is a bonus, as she lives with 2 young boys for company, one 5 and the other 4. Xena was the first GSP owned by Kim and Karl Bernhard, and was both their introduction to Breed Showing. Kim and Karl returned to Queensland's Sunshine Coast in mid 2000 and will undoubtedly continue showing the dogs. We wish them all the best in what will be a very competitive environment.

Bella is another who takes more than a 'chip' from her parents. She has great potential as a working hunter who is always attentive to the slightest possibility of game. Bella is agile while also possessing great patience, which she often displays while 'Pointing'.

Maggi is a departure from the Valache dogs,and is from Olga Gillies' Gillbrae Kennel in Queensland. We are hoping to fill a gap that is apparent with the distinct lack of solid liver dogs, which is the "Hall Mark" of the Gillbrae kennel. Maggi has settled in well and has an affectionate nature, keen hunting instincts and has a profound love of water.

Niki is a well balanced free moving energetic dog. As a baby, and at her first show, she was judged "Best Puppy in Show" at a GSP specialty show by an English Judge, who recognised her potential at a very young age. She has a typical loveable nature and a very keen hunting determination.
